The music of Kangmin Shin and Roman Baranskiy is as varied as their itinerant backgrounds. Their work reflects their shared experience as first-generation immigrants and as musicians who came of age working in popular genres. Both pupils of David Garner at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, they share with their teacher an abiding interest in suffusing the technical and formal conventions of the European concert music tradition with the energy and color of American popular music.
