Nava DunkelmanOn tour from Seattle, WA and in support of their debut album, The Sky Is A Suitcase teams up with local improvisers
Crystal Pascucci and
Nava Dunkelman for a night of beautiful music at The Backroom!
The Sky is a Suitcase (SEA) is dedicated to improvisation. Their songs are personal – about dreams, places, people and memories. These memories manifest their mood in the melodies and rhythms the group uses to express themselves in the moment. The Sky is a Suitcase imbues in their music the fullness of their collective humanity as a band and the intricacies of their relationships. Raymond Larsen (trumpet) and Levi Gillis (tenor saxophone) sing, whisper, hum, and shout, always moving the music upward with energy and hope. Carmen Rothwell (bass) and Mike Gebhart (drums), inspired by the great bass/drum teams before them, boil with energy and revel in icy stasis. The combined force of the horns and the rhythm section shares a new story, while creatively honoring the history of jazz music. Each member of group is an accomplished performer in their own right, contributing to Seattle-based projects the Cuong Vu Trio, Chemical Clock and a collection of other bands associated with the Table & Chairs record label rooted in the burgeoning creative music scene in Pacific Northwest. In 2014 and 2015, Larsen and Rothwell received the Earshot Jazz Golden Ear award for “Emerging Artist of the Year.”
