Chris Brown and Van-Anh Vo

Traditional Vietnamese music and live electronics converge in the collaboration of Chris Brown and Vân-Ánh Võ. Võ performs on the đàn tranh zither, đàn bầu monochord, and other Vietnamese instruments in conversation with Brown’s interactive electronics. On their April 13th Resonance series concert at the Exploratorium they will perform two interactive duets from that performance: Two Left Hands, in which the vibrato-rich melodies performed by Vo on the dan bau Vietnamese monochord are recorded as shapes in Brown's computer, then transformed into variations played by rapidly changing synthesized timbres; and Hall of Mirrors, in which a chromatic harmonic theme is played by dan-tranh Vietnamese zither and piano, then improvised on within a richly modulated environment of echos and reverberations. Finally, the duo will be joined by percussionist Nava Dunkelman playing gangsa Philippine flat-gongs in the premiere of The Thorn, a pulse-oriented rhythmic improvisation for live computer synthesis and percussion, in which Vo performs on the t'rung Vietnamese bamboo xylophone.
$25 General; $20 Members; Includes After Dark admission. Space is extremely limited (150 seats).
