On Thursday, January 11 at 7:30pm, Tom's Place presents
Kokuo
(John McCowen, clarinets
Kyle Bruckmann, oboe
Kanoko Nishi-Smith, koto
Jacob Felix Heule, percussion
Tom Djll, trumpet)
John McCowen, the Oakland-based composer/clarinetist/improviser, is moving away from the Bay Area, so we're throwing a little going-away concert for him, featuring his ensemble Kokuo.
John specializes in post-electronic acoustic music. His solo playing focuses on the extended possibilities of the clarinet/contrabass clarinet, embracing electronically-generative music as a structural starting point for acoustic composition and featuring long-form drones as a means to extrude structure, treating the clarinet as an acoustic synthesizer.
In Kokuo, McCowen plays with Bay-Area all-stars
Kyle Bruckmann (oboe),
Kanoko Nishi-Smith (koto),
Jacob Felix Heule (percussion) and
Tom Djll (trumpet).
Update:
Jacob Felix Heule will not be able to attend.
