Composer and pianist Sheli Nan performs with the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra in a rare concert appearance. Composer Sheli Nan has the unique ability and skills to understand the aesthetics of both the Baroque world of music and the contemporary world of music. In keeping with her classical focus, Nan’s latest work, "SAGA-Portrait of a 21st Century Child" is an achingly beautiful social commentary told through a musical lens.
Sheli Nan’s “SAGA-Portrait of a 21st Century Child” is a tragedy centered on a teenager who is alone in the world. No-one needs her, wants her, nor has time for her. As a result, she embodies ‘energy run wild’, with no moral compass, and completely bereft of compassion, except for herself. In the opera, we travel with our heroine on her tortuous, and sometimes humorous, journey toward self definition; as the violence both comes toward her and emanates from her. The opera hurts. The music soothes and frightens the listener and player. Yet it is the most gentle and most eloquent way to express who we are.
On June 9 when Sheli Nan performs with the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra in a rare concert appearance, the Overture will offer the listener an evocative presentation of the musical story of Saga. The Overture of Sheli Nan’s "SAGA-Portrait of a 21st Century Child" will be premiered by The San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra as part of their 10th Anniversary Gala. Mark Alburger, Director of the San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra, will conduct the work.
The San Francisco Composers Chamber Orchestra is the only orchestra in the world founded and directed by, as well as centered on the works of, living composers. At 8pm, June 9, 2012, the ensemble will present its 10th Anniversary Gala, featuring the San Francisco and world premieres from several composers, including Sheli Nan.
