zBug is an industrial jazz unit based in San Francisco, CA that presents structured improvisational music sets, based on the performance venue architecture and music compositional themes, featuring select guest members on concert engagements worldwide.

Sheila Bosco is a long time percussionist and drummer. Over the years she has played with many groups including Faun Fables, Autobody, Flaming Fire, and (her percussion project) Drumhead which was featured in Modern Drummer magazine. Currently, besides being a member of zBug since 2007, she plays with Poor Sweet Creatures, Christine Shields, and the once-in-a-while solo show. When Sheila isn’t playing the drums, she is working on composing music and doing sound design for theater, video, and dance where she is a long time music collaborator with inkBoat Butoh dance troupe.

David Leikam is a San Francisco-based composer, designer, improviser, producer, and bandleader of the industrial jazz unit zBug. Being born with cerebral palsy has affected his body and speech, given him a distinct view into his creative arts/music and being largely a self-taught multi-instrumentalist performer. His first piano solo performance was recorded at age 16 in January, 1988. Since 2001, after a decade of formal music composition study, he developed a unique philosophy of music such as “Each performance is a premiere improvisational composition of music and an exploration into the audio spectrum.” He is also furthering his music theories of structured improvisational styles coined Industrial Jazz based on performance area architecture and music composition vocabulary. In other words, he shapes his music to reflect the architecture of the performance space including historical relevance and instrumentation selection. It has the power to envelope his audience into its core that usually lasts extended periods of time with the average composition/performance between 20 to 45 minutes per piece. One of his concerts was a nonstop five hour performance broadcast live on radio with his duo project David Leikam aka Bug and Lucas Rodenbush aka DJ EBE along with 9 to 12 hour solo ambient Sleep Concert performances.

The Jim Ryan Trio will play a set of original jazz compositions and improvisations; inside and outside the conventional idiom.

Jim Ryan has been on the Bay Area music scene since the late 90's and began his active music career in Paris, France in the early '70s, participating in Steve Lacy's weekly free jazz jam sessions, and founded his first group ‘The Free Music Formation’ at that time.

Timothy Orr learned drumming from Ed Blackwell and constant gigging with rock and punk bands on the east coast. He now lives in Oakland and plays all styles from Zydeco to Free Jazz.

Cost: $6-10
