Darren Johnston and Friends Play Eric Dolphy's "Far Cry"

Darren Johnston tackles the classic 1962 Eric Dolphy album Far Cry in an entirely new light. Far Cry was originally on New Jazz, which was a subsidiary of the Prestige label. The original featured an all-star band with Dolphy on woodwinds, a young Booker Little on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, Ron Carter on bass, and Roy Haynes on drums. Far Cry is one of the few studio recordings of the Dolphy-Little partnership. It is also one of the earliest appearances of bassist Ron Carter on record. Dolphy took part in Ornette Coleman’s Free Jazz session before recording this album on the same day. This concert will re-imagine these songs, a collection of Dolphy and Byard originals, as well as some standards, with the less orthodox instrumentation of David Phillips on pedal steel guitar, Danny Lubin-Ladin on trombone, Miles Wick on bass, and Johnston on trumpet.
