Ethan Iverson & Mark Turner duo/Anja Lechner & François Couturier duo

Two of jazz’s most influential instrumentalists and composers share a bill with a critically lauded contemporary classical duo. Ethan Iverson is best known as pianist behind boundary-breaking trio The Bad Plus as well as sideman work with veteran drummer Billy Hart – a quartet recording for ECM that also features the superlative tenorist Mark Turner. Turner’s eclecticism and vision have been heard as a bandleader and co-leader of the trio Fly (with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard), as part of Dave Holland Big Band, and the SFJAZZ Collective. His acclaimed ECM debut, Lathe of Heaven, was released in 2014. Munich-born cellist Anja Lechner and French pianist François Couturier are part of the Tarkovsky Quartet and together released an acclaimed 2014 duo album on ECM, Moderato Cantabile. Lechner is founding member of the Rosamunde Quartett and frequently works in trio with fellow ECM artists Dino Saluzzi and Felix Saluzzi. Couturier has been a driving force in European music for four decades, working in improvisational settings with artists including John McLaughlin, Daniel Humair and Anouar Brahem. This evening of duets presents pure distillations of the ECM esthetic from both the jazz and classical worlds.
