Julie Herndon - harmonium, electronics, John Ivers - clarinet and electronics

San Francisco-based H/I Ensemble explores breath, song, and synthesis in sound. Julie Herndon (keys, voice, electronics) and John Ivers (clarinets, electronics) use reactive elements to create malleable, semi-permeable musical structures. Referencing drone pop, ambient spectralism, and free improvisation, H/I develops immersive songscapes.
Julie Herndon is an Oakland-based composer and performer working with internal/external space through song, electronics, text, graphics, and improvisation. Her electroacoustic work has been described as “striking” and “blended to inhabit a surprisingly expressive space” (San Francisco Classical Voice). Her compositions have been performed by ensembles including JACK Quartet, Ensemble Proton Bern, Line Upon Line Percussion, Retro Disco, St. Lawrence String Quartet, Elevate and Left Coast Chamber Ensemble. Performances include festivals and venues such as Artistry Space and Hotel Vagabond in Singapore, soundSCAPE in Italy, Zen Mountain Cloud Center in Santa Fe, Wintergreen Performing Arts Summer Festival in Virginia, Megapolis Audio Art Festival in Oakland, and Hot Air Festival in San Francisco. She is currently the composer in residence for Voci Women’s Vocal Ensemble and is a doctoral candidate at Stanford University.

John Ivers is a Bay Area composer, clarinetist, sound artist, and improviser known for his dynamic compositions and aural explorations. Traversing both acoustic and electronic mediums, his work explores intimate musical textures, symmetrical constructions, structured improvisation, and multiple temporal spaces. Ivers’ work has been featured at the soundSCAPE, highSCORE, Walden CMR, Cluster, and Atlantic music festivals. He has written for ensembles such as Quartetto Indaco, Amaranth Quartet, Brooklyn College’s ConTempo Ensemble, for the Leftcoast Chamber Ensemble’s Intersection workshop, and the San Fransisco Contemporary Music Players. His recent work on Distant Radio Transmission with Roscoe Mitchell has been featured by the Orchestra of the SEM Ensemble directed by Petr Kotik, Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna conducted by Tonino Battista, at Ostrava Days Festival, and at the de Young Museum, San Francisco conducted by Steed Cowart.
