Chris Jonas/Randy McKean Quartet + Pinbokeh Trio

Jonas/McKean Quartet:
Chris Jonas, soprano & tenor saxes
Randy McKean, alto sax, Bb & bass clarinets
Lisa Mezzacappa, bass
Jordan Glenn, drums

A rare Bay Area appearance from Santa Fe based saxophonist and composer Chris Jonas. Renewing a collaboration that began nearly 30 years ago, reedman Randy McKean joins him at the helm of a new quartet, with McKean’s Bristle bandmate Lisa Mezzacappa on bass, and Weiner Kids mastermind Jordan Glenn on drums. Jonas’s work with Anthony Braxton, Cecil Taylor, and William Parker, plus McKean’s mentors Braxton, Paul Smoker and David Rosenboom, will inform the proceedings. Expect intricate art walks and loose freebop reminiscent of influences Steve Lacy, Ornette Coleman, the New York Art Quartet, and John Carter.

Pinbokeh Trio:
Nathan Chamberlain, guitar
Josiah Branaman, bass
Paul Sakai, drums

Pinbokeh is a trio based out of Oakland, CA that explores lush textures and soundscapes. A collection of unmetered rhythms and stretched out harmonic patterns create pieces that are reminiscent of the Nels Cline Singers with the still ambiance of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Grouper. With each member of the group coming from rock, jazz, and contemporary classical backgrounds, Pinbokeh’s music renders varied influences and forms into their work.
