The Rhythms of Candomblé: ACTA Apprenticeship Presentation
This event is a culmination of the apprenticeship between master artist Jorge Alabê and his student
Robert Lopez. Jorge’s unique position of ”Alabê” in the Candomblé religion of Brazil puts him at the highest level one can reach in the tradition as a drummer. Their work together has focused on the vast vocabulary for the atabaque drums of Candomblé. While Robert has been under the tutelage of Jorge for the past four years, the support from the Alliance for California Traditional Arts throughout 2018 has allowed for a concentrated study period that would not be otherwise possible.
