The Film Noir Project
Ensemble For These Times (E4TT)’s homage to things musical and noir, with world premieres of five film noir-themed works, and more:
a piano solo by exciting Serbian-American composer Aleksandra Vrebalov (b. 1972, one of the Kronos Quartet’s “Fifty for the Future” project)
a cello-piano duo by emerging Russian-American composer Polina Nazaykinskaya (b.1987), whom E4TT first encountered in its Call for Scores
a new work by SF Conservatory of Music’s Lennie Moore
a cello solo by E4TT’s own co-founder and resident composer, David Garner (b. 1954)
The winner of the “Best Sound Track to a Film Noir Clip Student Competition
“Noir Vignettes”(2014) for cello and piano by 2017 Barlow Prize winner Stacy Garrop (b. 1969),
“the great famine” (rev. 2016) for soprano and cello by Justin Merritt (b. 1975), another work from E4TT’s Call for Scores,
“Phobias & Infatuations” (selections) for soprano and piano by Melanie Mitrano (from the Call for Scores),
and three songs by Franz Waxman: “Lied der Kaiserin” (from Ich und die Kaiserin, 1933), “Ewige Liebe gibt’s nur im Roman!” from Das Kabinett des Dr. Larifari , 1930) and “The Wishing Star” (from Taras Bulba, 1962).
E4TT musicians Nanette McGuinness and cellist Anne Lerner-Wright will be joined by guest pianist Xin Zhao for this program, the centerpiece of E4TT’s eleventh season in 2018/19 and a co-production with MaryClare Brzytwa and the SF Conservatory of Music’S TAC Department, with projected images by Digital Giraffe artist Corinne Whitaker.
