Seiyoung Jang is a composer, improviser, and maker currently based in Oakland, CA. She aims to celebrate manifestations of organic forms in resistance of thoughtless sterility, with a focus on intersubjectivity and embodiment. She has studied with Laetitia Sonami, James Fei, Ted Coffey, Maggi Payne, Chris Brown, and Pauline Oliveros, among others. She obtained her MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media from Mills College, Oakland, CA, and a BA in Psychology and Music from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA. Seiyoung will be headed to Boston in the fall to pursue a PhD in Creative Practice & Critical Inquiry at Harvard University, studying with Vijay Iyer.

The Ether Ship is an electronic music ensemble that plays ambient space music. The group has explored their sounds in remote natural locations such as Chaco Canyon, Joshua Tree National Park, Carrizo Plain, Anza Borrego Desert and Inga Warta. Australia. The group incorporates sonified sounds from deep space, and micro worlds of proteins and microtubules. Sounds made by terrestrial life forms such as insects, mammals and birds are also used. The main philosophy of the group is how the sounds of the universe combined with the cosmic background radiation and EM fields in space directly affect our consciousness. The electronic sounds they produce are an attempt to mimic those universal sounds enabling a listening experience that can expand our minds. Equipment recently installed is a newly designed protein synthesizer from MIT that’s capable of representing the sounds of 100,000 proteins that make up living systems on our planet as well as the possibility of creating sounds for life forms that would be using a xenolinguistic frame of reference in time and space. The preferred instruments are tablet computers, voice, an electronically modulated harmonica all capable of resonating to produce a drifting like soundscape allowing for a suspended experience of floating in a sea of frequencies capable of creating life as we know it.
