Elder Ones

Sun, July 28, 7:30pm – 9:30pm

Elder Ones is led by Amirtha Kidambi, voice, harmonium, compositions. She has played in Mary Halvorson's Code Girl, Darius Jones' Elizabeth-Caroline Unit, and a duo with Lea Bertucci; and has worked with musicians including Tyshawn Sorey, Matana Roberts, Ambrose Akinmusire, Ingrid Laubrock, Trevor Dunn, Ava Mendoza, William Parker and the late Muhal Richard Abrams.

The quartet includes Matt Nelson (Battle Trance), soprano saxophone; Max Jaffe (JOBS/Peter Evans), drums; Nick Dunston (Tyshawn Sorey Trio, Jeff "Tain" Watts), bass. Elder Ones' music is very influenced by free jazz, Indian music and the classical avant-garde. A major point of reference for the sound and concept is political and spiritual free jazz of the 60s/70s. The music is deeply politically oriented, dealing with themes of colonialism, capitalism and political oppression.

Elder Ones released their first album, Holy Science, on Northern Spy in 2018. The group has received praise from The New York Times, DownBeat Magazine, Pitchfork, WIRE Magazine, Jazzwise, Revue & Corrigée and other European press.
