Please join the Mills Gamelan and Gamelan Encinal for an evening of music performed on a unique aluminum gamelan using a tuning developed by Lou Harrison, and built by Daniel Schmidt with Mills students.
The Mills Gamelan will be playing a mix of traditional central Javanese pieces, and new student created works. Gamelan Encinal will be performing new works, including:
"Waimanalo to Wonogiri - for Javanese Gamelan and Steel Guitar" - by Stephen Parris
"Gendhing Alamosa" - by Maria Siino
Gamelan Encinal is an American aluminum gamelan ensemble founded by Stephen Parris in 2015. Their focus is on the performance of new works and past works for just tuned gamelan
Gamelan is a word used to refer to particular types of percussion orchestras with roots in Indonesia. Encinal is the Spanish word for oak grove, and is what our home town of Oakland was formerly named. The instruments we use also feature oak frames.
