Part one of a two part event; part two concert film on Sun. March 15, 3pm. Jandek is the pseudonym used by musical artist Sterling Smith for the records released since 1978 and the concerts performed since 2004 through the Houston-based, independent label Corwood Industries. Almost every song in Jandek’s discography, which includes more than fifty studio albums and thirty concert albums with complementary DVDs featuring a startlingly diverse array of instrumentation played in strikingly unusual and challenging improvisational styles, is unique. Based on the research conducted by Nikolai Sadik-Ogli for a book-length manuscript examining Jandek’s work within its contemporary cultural and historical context, the presentation will provide a chronological introduction and analysis of the most important highlights of Jandek’s prolific career through photographs, audio tracks, and film clips along with an introduction to his outside artistic collaborations and appearances in other media.
