Earthwise welcomes Marta Sanchez jazz piano duo

Marta Sanchez piano and Roman Filiu alto sax. Marco Diaz piano and Melecio Magdaluyo reeds open the show.

Part of a series of piano duo co-bills.

Russonello of the New York Times named Marta Sanchez band one of his top ten performances of the year, 2019:

. Marta Sánchez Quintet, ‘El Rayo de Luz’
Ms. Sánchez writes for her quintet with a melody-first approach — and melody-second, and melody-third. She weaves the alto saxophone of Roman Filiu together with the tenor of Chris Cheek and her own line-driven piano style. The music of this international group (the members all hail from different countries) is driven by intersections and rhythmic friction, but it remains fluid and acrobatic. (By special arrangement, our show is a duet with her sax player -- in the opening set two musicians who appeared here at The Mitch with John Santos exhibit the same format, sax and piano, yet will likely switch chairs with Diaz doubling on trumpet and Magdaluyo pumping the keys.

This is the start of a series within the series utilizing The Mitchell Park Baldwin piano, which was provided for secondary to the $40M bond issue we the people approved five plus years ago. In at least two shows in the series,on the other hand, the artist added piano because of the amenities of the room.

As told to C.M. Johnson for Downbeat:

In your work, you often have involved other Latin musicians—Cubans, Argentinians, Chileans. Is that a conscious choice, part of your musical vision?

Well, Román Filiu came to Madrid years ago, as well as other Cuban musicians. I played with them because they’re amazing. They played at a level and in a way that, in my opinion, no one in Madrid was playing. And they brought so much to my music—-they were guides for my music. Whenever I am in Madrid, I play with them.

Filiu, I chose because I love his sound, the way he plays. He’s been my friend since he lived in Madrid. But I think it’s more of a coincidence—this generation of Cuban musicians are really strong players and they were in Madrid.

People who come to this show will be telling their friends for years of their discovery of Marta Sanchez.
