Set One Phillip Greenlief Solo (tenor saxophone)

Since his emergence on the west coast in the late 1970s, saxophonist/composer Phillip Greenlief has achieved international acclaim for his recordings and performances with musicians and composers in the post-jazz continuum as well as new music innovators and virtuosic improvisers. He has performed with Wadada Leo Smith, Meredith Monk, Rashaun Mitchell and They Might Be Giants. Albums include LANTSKAP LOGIC with Fred Frith and Evelyn Davis, THAT OVERT DESIRE OF OBJECT with Joelle Leandre, ALL AT ONCE with FPR (Frank Gratkowski and Jon Raskin), and OH THAT MONSTER with LA punk pioneers Thelonious Monster. Recent residencies have included the Banff Center for Art and Creativity, Neue Muzik Koln, and Headlands Center for the Arts. His critical writing has been published in Artforum, Open Space (SFMOMA), and Signal to Noise.

Set Two A bi-coastal trio comprising Dan Clucas (cornet, moxeño, violin), Kyle Motl (double bass), and Nathan Hubbard (drums, percussion). Clucas/Motl/Hubbard have been recognized for their "chemistry deriv[ing] from a fine balance of concord and difference" (Bill Meyer) resulting in "one force of nature, vibrating together" (Bruce Gallanter). Their record, Daydream and Halting (FMR, 2022) was featured on a number of best-of lists across the globe.

Kyle Motl is a bassist, composer, and improviser based in NYC and described as a “spectacularly adventurous
and dynamic musician” whose playing is noted for both “iridescent delicacy as well as abrasive
force” (The Wire). A frequent soloist, his solo performances offer a “wide range of wonderfu
protean delights that promise to change us by revealing things we could never have
imagined” (Free Jazz Collective).

Dan Clucas is a trumpet player and composer living and working in Los Angeles. Born in
Anaheim, California in 1966, he began playing trumpet at age ten, soon thereafter discovering
the music of Dizzy Gillespie, which in turn led to a lifelong study of and respect for the African
American music known as jazz. While he strives for individual statement in his music, Clucas
also strives to acknowledge the imprint of past masters, from Louis Armstrong and Duke
Ellington to Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra. He has studied with Bobby Bradford and Wadada
Leo Smith, and has performed and recorded over the last two decades with such L.A.
luminaries as Nels Cline, Alex Cline, Steuart Liebig, Vinny Golia, Joe Baiza, Rich West, and
Michael Vlatkovich, to name a few.

Percussionist/Composer/Instrument Builder Nathan Hubbard works in many different fields, but
in general his work shows a decided interest in exploring the possibilities of sound and
embracing the passing of time. This interest in sound can be seen in everything from his
extended sound language as an improvisor to his homemade and found instruments. The
different rates of passing time become relevant as both a rhythmic impetus and defining
element in his compositions and their changing definitions of form, shape and outcome.
