1026 Pleasant Oaks Dr 94523 In pleasant hill

The Opening Ears Concert Series presents a night of music featuring:

James Goode solo electronics
Scott Looney (piano/electronics) in duo with Aaron Bennett Saxophone

Doors open at 6:15 music at 7. Food and drinks served.

James Goode: coaxes extraordinary sounds from everyday objects. Russian nested dolls are transformed into squealing narwhals; bird calls into growling lions; the voicebox from a stuffed animal into a flock of hungry seagulls; and brief vocal sounds into the soundtrack for a comic and surreal conga line. Defying easy description or pigeonholing, his music takes you to an unfamiliar place filled with luscious atonality and compelling polyrhythm. Goode navigates a course between austere  minimalism on the one hand and pandemonium on the other. His soundscapes are both synaesthetic and cinematic, inspired by, and inspiration for, dreams and hypnagogic visions of exceptional vividness.

Scott Looney/ Aaron Bennett duo:

This duo of explorative sonic adventurers goes back 3 decades when they first met at CalArts. Over two decades ago they were one of the first groups to explore live processing in the Recursive Heretics project, where Scott would process Aaron's improvisations with a combination of primitive live sampling, keyboard and computer triggered playback, and effects manipulation, creating a spiraling feedback loop of call and response that expanded the totality of musical and sonic space. Recently they began playing again in a trio with bassist Matt Montgomery in a trio setting which recently recorded a session that will be released soon digitally on the Zero Minus label. Tragically Matt unexpectedly passed away recently, so this upcoming recording is sadly the only documented evidence of the fruits of this new collaboration. This evening's set will be lovingly dedicated to his memory and spirit.

The duo also played last year at the West Oakland Sound Series at the Dresher space, so you can watch the video of that here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqUXnylpU5Y&list=PLbPuo0isR4Ns9QOLbu4oCg7o9sEqcbiMC
