KRONOS QUARTET CREATIVE LAB #3
For more than 50 years, San Francisco’s Kronos Quartet has reimagined what the string quartet experience can be, and 836M is proud to be the host for a series of their Creative Labs, the final one for this year to take place on November 5.
Through this series, the public has witnessed the Kronos Quartet’s creative process up close. Previous Creative Labs featured guest artists Soo Yeon Lyuh, a master of the haegeum, a traditional Korean bowed instrument with two strings, and experimental sound artist and performer Victoria Shen. For their Lab on November 5, the Quartet will rehearse a work by composer Aleksandra Vrebalov.
A native of the former Yugoslavia, Vrebalov left Serbia in 1995 and now lives in New York City. She has written more than 100 works, from chamber pieces to opera to music for dance and film. Of these works, 16 were commissioned by the Kronos Quartet. Her work is characterized by a fusion of influences from various musical traditions of the countries where she has lived or traveled, including the Balkans, the United States and the Middle East.
