The Telegraph Quartet will be joined by five amazing string students from the University of Michigan, who will be performing alongside the members of the Quartet after intensive work this past Fall Semester!
Please join us for a concert celebrating the tumultuously personal chamber music of the early 20th Century - all three of these masterworks feature music that expresses the unrest of both this time period, of the composers in their search for a new style of expression and of the grasping of late romanticism as it turns inward to plumb the depths of the inner psyche. Both Webern and Bartok's early string quartets deal with dark material, from the former's mourning of his mother's passing to the latter's experiences of civilian life during World War I. To close the program, inspired by the then scandalous poetry of Richard Dehmel, Schönberg's "Transfigured Night" begins in despair and dread only to be utterly transformed by empathy and hope.
The Telegraph Quartet (Eric Chin and Joseph Maile, violins; Pei-Ling Lin, viola; Jeremiah Shaw, cello) formed in 2013 is a previous recipient of the prestigious Naumburg Chamber Music Award and the Grand Prize at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. The Quartet has performed in venues across the United States and abroad, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, and Town Hall, San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre, the Philharmonie de Paris, and the Schoenberg Center in Vienna.
