Named after the title character in The Third Man, The Holly Martins is a Bay Area trio exploring jazz-inflected improvised music without a traditional rhythm section. With no fixed roles, each musician shifts fluidly between soloist and accompanist, creating a more open, conversational sound.
The group reimagines familiar standards, reshaping time and form, and performs original compositions that feel “jazz-like,” but with twists and turns such as asymmetric harmonic rhythms, cycling rhythmic and pitch patterns.
