MOVEMENTS FOR MOVEMENT IN THE EVENT OF BEING MOVED:
This event, conceptualized by Yiming Clara, churns every exhalation within the space of the gallery (spilling out just a little) into performance, drawing out the latent choreographies that organize social spaces in the slippage between gesture and everyday movement.

Structured in four symphonic movements, this dispersed orchestra features Clara and four collaborators (Gianna Caudillo, Denise Heredia, Cammie Lee, and Jiang Nanyi), who gather a concurrence of discrete performances, from dance, music, and ekphrasis to cutting a wall and serving tea. MOVEMENTS FOR MOVEMENT IN THE EVENT OF BEING MOVED is organized on the occasion of Clara’s /room/ installation 似曾相识 | Dance, in Theater with Window.

Yiming Clara is an artist raised in Beijing, living and working in Berkeley. She is interested in the language in things beyond words, and the things that can’t fit squarely within language. With an interest in how we move about in the world between those surfaces of material and of social construction, her work takes impressions of the familiar as medium and constructs situations that open onto new potential worlds.

Denise Heredia is a musician, engineer, and designer of interactive (physical) things. They are interested in materials, process, slowness, and exalting the mundane. Sonically, their work centers around collage, noise, and crafting novel instrumental interfaces. Denise is a graduate from UC Berkeley’s Master of Design, where their work focused on critical design and tangible interfaces.

Cammie Lee is a writer and tea sommelier exploring non-optical theories of perception and wisdom rooted in the body. She received her BA from Princeton University in 2022, where she concentrated in English. Prior to beginning her PhD training in English at Berkeley, Cammie was the recipient of a Fulbright teaching grant in South Korea, worked at Zone Books in Brooklyn, and poured tea at a Taiwanese tea store in New York City.

Jiang Nanyi is a dancer and theater practitioner based in Beijing. She graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 2024 with degrees in Economics and Theater. In June 2024, her production of The Happy Prince premiered at Aranya Theater Festival Migratory Birds 300, Qinhuangdao, Hebei, China. In May 2025, she performed in Robert Wilson’s China residency production of Heiner Müller’s Hamletmachine, which premiered globally at Huichang Theatre Season 003, Huichang, Jiangxi, China.

Gianna Caudillo is a San Francisco Bay Area-based double bassist, vocalist, composer, and improviser. She holds a BA in Music from the University of California, Berkeley, where she studied free jazz, avant-garde music, and improvisation with creative music luminaries Myra Melford and Ben Goldberg. Named an Alfred Hertz Memorial Traveling Scholar, her recent activities as composer and bandleader include avant-garde jazz, improvised chamber music, and collaborations with experimental film, dance, and visual art at BAMPFA and Gallery 2727
