Real-time cartographic improvisations using projected, manipulated digital maps by Eric Theise, in collaboration with Nancy Beckman (shakuhachi), Tom Bickley (recorders), Ron Heglin (voice, invented languages), & Petra Zélie (electroacoustic noise). A visual wash of street grids, land masses, water bodies, and curiosities from built and natural environments. Resonant openings and switchbacks. Orphaned labels. Free-floating symbology. Difference tones and untethered drones. Saturated colors and the subtlest of tints. Jittery zooms, pans, and traversals. Noisy apertures and sonic fissures. Glitches from crowdsourced data.

The performance will last an hour and will occasionally introduce strobing effects that may affect photosensitive viewers.

Bios

Eric Theise is a San Francisco-based artist and geospatial software developer. Through video, performance, and works on paper he reinvigorates the perceptual inquiries of structural filmmakers, experimental animators, the Light and Space movement, and 60's light shows – with the occasional injection of letterform experiments inspired by visual poetry – as new possibilities in the realm of digital cartography. Theise manipulates projected digital maps in performance with musicians and other time-based artists under the title A Synesthete's Atlas. Since its Lisbon premiere in 2022, Synesthete's has been performed in fifty-plus North American and European cities.

Gusty Winds May Exist is Nancy Beckman, shakuhachi & Tom Bickley, recorder

Nancy Beckman studied Myoan-Ryu shakuhachi honkyoku through Meianji Temple in Kyoto for five years, receiving the name Fukushin and the license (Menkyo Kaiden) to teach from the temple. Later, she studied various types of shakuhachi and ethnomusicology at Wesleyan University. She also graduated from the Music for Healing and Transition Program, where she played shakuhachi and lyre for hospice. As a member of ensembles Gusty Winds May Exist (with Tom Bickley), Gachapon, The Cornelius Cardew Choir and Dream Down Duvet, she improvises and plays experimental music and composes improvisational sound meditations. She lives in Berkeley and teaches the traditional Myoan shakuhachi repertoire.

Tom Bickley tries to listen to the world always hoping to hear more and more fully. He grew up in the semitropical soundscape of Houston, sojourned in Washington, DC (studying music, theology, and library science) and came to California as a composer in residence at Mills College. He performs using recorder, EWI, voice and electronics, teaches music at the Bay Area Center for Waldorf Teacher Training and Deep Listening courses though the Center for Deep Listening at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He performs with shakuhachi player Nancy Beckman as Gusty Winds May Exist, with David Barnett as the recorder duo Three Trapped Tigers, with the Doug Van Nort Electro-Acoustic Orchestra, with Gachapon Quartet, and co-founded and directs the Cornelius Cardew Choir.

Ron Heglin is a Trombonist and Vocalist working with extended technique on the Trombone and with spoken and sung imaginary languages as a Vocalist.His vocal music has been influenced by his study of North Indian vocal music. He works both compositionally and in an improvisational mode and is a member of the Bay Area music context as well as performing internationally. He is a founding member of the groups MUSIC FOR ALL OCCASIONS, ROTODOTI, and BRASSIOSAURUS, and has performed with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Leo Smith, Henry Brant, Logos Duo, Tim Perkis, John Bischoff, Tom Djll, and Toyoji Tomita.

Petra Zélie shapeshifts between sound artist and filmmaker, making electroacoustic noise in liminal spaces where boundaries blur. She works with granular synthesis, custom-built electronics, and field recordings—bringing sounds into the spaces she's exploring, then letting those explorations find their way into performances. Recent performance highlights: Stanford University, UC Berkeley, SF Sound (USA), as well as headlining La Cloaca Festival 2025 (MEX).
