A visionary of jazz improvisation redefines traditional ideas of tonal beauty

WADADA LEO SMITH

"Smith's trumpet mastery is unquestionable..." -- Litweiler, Down Beat

New Langton Arts presents a concert by American jazz musician and musicologist WADADA LEO SMITH. Known for his lyrical, direct style of trumpet-playing and his use of nontraditional "free scales", Smith=B9s horn style is deeply rooted in the history of modern jazz. For Langton he teams up with drummer Steve Smith (formerly of the 70s and 80s rock bank Journey and currently with Vital Information) to present an evening of recent and improvised compositions. Tickets are $8 general, $6 members, students, and seniors.

His associations there with Muhal Richard Abrams, Leroy Jenkins, and Anthony Braxton produced a number of recordings as well as those under his own leadership with his New Delta Ahkri ensemble.
