This John Cage Retrospective pairs early works from the 1940s with two later, more conceptual compositions: Ryoanji, Cage's invocation of a famous Zen garden in Japan, and the semi improvisational Four6, as realized by guest artists Joan Jeanrenaud and Fred Frith with tubist Peter Wahrhaftig and percussionist William Winant, for whom the piece was originally written. The Perilous Night, for prepared piano, will be accompanied by a projected image of the haunting Jasper Johns painting this music inspired.
