Jiffy-Scuttler One: CARL STONE and RAJAR

CARL STONE (extroverted samples) and RAJAR (live radio signal poaching):

CARL STONE will be following up his fantastic 'introverted' set last friday at Field Effects with his 'extroverted' (read: "raucous") set at JS. Carl is one of the pioneers of live computer music, and has been hailed by the Village Voice as "the king of sampling." and "one of the best composers living in (the USA) today." He has used computers in live performance since 1986. Stone was born in Los Angeles and now divides his time between San Francisco and Japan. He studied composition at the California Institute of the Arts with Morton Subotnick and James Tenney and has composed electro-acoustic music almost exclusively since 1972. His works have been performed in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and the Near East. In addition to his schedule of performance, composition and touring, he is on the faculty of the Media Department at Chukyo University in Japan.

RAJAR is (in alphabetical order) Bob Boster, Xopher Davidson, Michael Gendreau, David Kwan, and Patty Liu. We focus on real-time processing of live radio transmissions using a variety of transformative strategies, reconfiguring these sounds in hopes of enhancing their entertainment value. Even more so than other improvisational musics, each performance is a unique experience as a result of the differences in radio reception at each location and the program material available at the moment. For those too tired to google our names, here's too little info about the members of RAJAR (in reverse alphabetical order):

Patty Liu is a composer and performer of electronic and acoustic music in various ensembles and contexts. Most recently, she's played in the Armageddon String Ensemble (violin) and Cheryl Leonard's Instrument in Trees "band" (cello and tree materials) and composed for Kirsten Williams' Strong Current Dance Company.

David Kwan: Last night a DJ saved my life because I was sittin' there bored to death. Hey, listen up to your local DJ. You better hear what he's got to say. And if the FCC gives you trouble, just you move out on the double. And you don't let it trouble your brain because away goes troubles down the drain. I said, away goes troubles down the drain. There's not a problem that I can't fix because I can do it in the mix. There's not a problem that I can't fix because I can do it in the mix. Repeat

Michael Gendreau is well represented in the recorded world (as half of Crawling with Tarts and as Experts of Legitimation, as well as on his recent 23 Five release under his own name), but never seems to hear himself on the radio.

Xopher Davidson (sometimes known as Antimatter, amongst other pseudonyms) has a strong affinity for his Tanberg receiver, believing that Danish technology is, in this case, superior.

Bob Boster frequently performs sound collage under the name Mr. Meridies, and is a member of the Armageddon String Ensemble. His favorite radio station is BBC Radio 4, but he's also quite fond of his alma mater, WXYC in Chapel Hill, NC.
