Sam Rivers, Reggie Workman, Jason Moran

William Parker Quartet

"Unrepentant renegade" (Village Voice) Sam Rivers, hailed by critic Nat Hentoff as "a complete tenor man [and] a continually adventurous improviser," joins with storied Coltrane veteran Reggie Workman, "a virtuoso bassist whose music never stands still" (Entertainment Weekly) along with young pianist Jason Moran, who took top "Rising Star" honors in no less than three categories ("Jazz Artist," "Piano," and "Composer") in this year's Down Beat Critics Poll, in an all-maverick double-bill with one of the prime movers on New York's Downtown scene, bassist and composer William Parker. Called "the leading bassist among the avant-garde" by Down Beat, Parker has left an indelible stamp on creative music as the leader of his own groups, as a sideman with the likes of Cecil Taylor and David S. Ware, and as co-founder/artistic director of New York's annual Vision Festival. No generation gap here: The performers might range in age from 28 to 80, but they are all on the cutting edge of 21st-century jazz improvisation.
