Sketches of a permanent sound installation by Hugh Livingston and Michael Zbyszynski

Drop in, hear sounds orbit wildly through the gallery thanks to our ustom 12-channel spatialization system, ask questions, enjoy the soundscape, check out the flat panel NXT technology speakers, see the nifty software patches in action!

This unusual sonic environment includes recorded performances by Philip Gelb, Vinny Golia and Pauline Oliveros. This is the only preview event before the permanent sound installation opens in the subterranean parking garage of the Frank Gehry-designed Edgemar in Santa Monica. Using Max/MSP software, the composition cycles throughout the day based on ocean tide predictions. A mixture of found sounds from the Edgemar courtyard and instrumental recordings, the installation provides a musical response to the architectural environment. Custom spatialization techniques and thousands of 'driftwood' sound objects create an ongoing, evolving soundscape. Special sonic events mark high and low tides.

After the Oakland preview, the installation opens May 16th in Santa Monica and continues indefinitely.
