Joel Futterman, piano; Ike Levin, drums;
Alvin Fielder, saxophone
Friday and Sunday, we have a very rare performance by pianist Joel Futterman, along with Ike Levin, and Alvin Fielder. Playing with jazz greats at the age of 14 and having over 30 recordings under his belt, Joel Futterman consistently pushes the limits of the piano to techniques never heard in jazz. Futterman has developed a technique based on completely autonomous playing between the hands….amazing to see and hear. As Steve Huey of the All Music Guide sums it up, “Joel Futterman is one of the few modern free improvisers who has been able to not only master the percussive density of Cecil Taylor, but inject his own flavor into the frantic yet intellectual style Taylor pioneered.
Amazing drummer Alvin Fielder is one of the charter members of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Music (AACM), a groundbreaking artists' collective dedicated to promoting the new freedom in jazz. Fielder played with artists ranging from Sun Ra to Eddie Harris, and held down a very prominent gig as a member of the Roscoe Mitchell Sextet.
Ike Levin, also from the Chicago improv scene and being involved with the AACM sound, comes through on the saxophone to round out this trio. Levin studied music at the Roosevelt University Conservatory of Music and in the Jazz Music Studies program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as private instruction with AACM’s Fred Anderson. Ike’s influences include Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, and Ornette Coleman.
