A Celebration of the Paris Commune
Join anarchist historian and speaker, Barry Pateman (Emma Goldman Papers Project, Kate Sharpley Library) and The Luddites (Carla Kihlstedt, Marika Hughes, Ches Smith, Devin Hoff) for an evening of history, music, and revolution.
Historian, Barry Pateman, is interested in the development of American anarchism and the way it relates to labor and other radical movements in general including socialism, feminism, communism, and free speech. The associate editor of a recent biography of Anarchist, Emma Goldman, part one of the culmination of the work of the Emma Goldman Papers Project, Pateman also served as an advisor to the PBS documentary about Goldman. Pateman also works on the Kate Sharpley Library (based in Berkeley), a project devoted to uncovering and making public source documents and other material that call into question the veracity of "capital H" History, largely written by the powerful. Pateman has been featured as a speaker on an Alternative Tentacles compilation, "Mob Action Against the State," with other radical critics and celebrities, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jello Biafra, Paul Krassner, and Harry Britt.
The Luddites are an ensemble of some of the Bay Area's most notable (or should be) experimental musicians. Ches Smith (drums) and Devin Hoff (bass) comprise the duo, Good for Cows, as well as the dynamic rhythm section of choice of several large ensembles led by John Schott, Nels Cline, and others. Cellist, Marika Hughes, in addition to freelancing in local symphonies, plays in the bands Two Foot Yard and Red Pocket, and sings in the a cappella group, Charming Hostess. Marika's discography includes recording for Tin Hat Trio, Santana, Mr. Bungle and Third Eye Blind. Carla Kihlstedt, vocalist and violinist, performs with Tin Hat Trio and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and is an occasional member of Charming Hostess. She has performed and recorded with a host of musical luminaries, including Tom Waits, Fred Frith, and Mr. Bungle.
