A lecture-demonstration on dhrupad singing, the oldest form
of North Indian classical music, by the highly acclaimed
singer, Amelia Cuni. Ms. Cuni lived in India for more than 10
years studying dhrupad singing from renowned masters like R.
Fahimuddin Dagar, Vidur Mallik and D. C. Vedi. She has also
studied kathak dance and drumming. She currently lives in
Berlin and teaches Indian singing at the Vicenza
Conservatoium in Italy. Ms. Cuni will be accompanied by
pakhawaj player Phil Hollenbeck. The pakhawaj is an ancient
North Indian barrel drum, forerunner of the modern tabla. Mr.
Hollenbeck is a percussionist of 35 years experience, trained
in India and the US by 8 master Indian drummers. He was twice
awarded Fellowships from the American Institute of Indian
Studies ('84 & '96), and now resides in the Bay Area.
