Raymond Scott composed music that was a dizzying mix of classical music, Ellington, jungle Jazz, Jewish Klezmer and innovative swing. Though he did not compose tunes for use as soundtracks, his music has become known primarily as the soundtrack behind the antics of famous Looney Tune's and Merrie Melodies' characters.
Veteran Bay Area saxophonist and clarinetist Jeff Sanford fell under the spell of Scott's music as a kid in Queen's watching Saturday morning cartoons. He's spent the past few years painstakingly tracking down charts of Scott's intricately arranged music and organizing a 13-piece band to play it.
For listeners who don't yet know Scott's music outside of a cartoon context, Sanford's show is a great introduction to his inspiring, genre-defying sound.
