Bay Area based jazz pianist Larry Vuckovich was born in Yugoslavia, spent decades in the jazz scenes of San Francisco, New York and Europe and has played with many of the giants of straight-ahead jazz. In 1980 he recorded Blue Balkan, a first attempt at introducing Afro-Serbian jazz. Critically acclaimed, the album couldn't find an audience.
Twenty-years later, Blue Balkan has been re-released and both Vuckovich's recording and his ensemble are being embraced for creating a sound that combines musical influences from Europe, Africa and the Middle East with Jazz. In his vibrant, vital global jam session, Vuckovich weds African American spirituals with Serbian Folk songs, gets dirty with the blues, and infuses jazz tunes with exotic rhythms and accents.
