Acclaimed Oakland saxophonist
Phillip Greenlief will perform a solo set that features compositions written for him by Pauline Oliveros and Joelle Leandre. In addition to performing original works and pieces by Frank Gratkowski, Jon Raskin and John Shiurba, Greenlief will present his Deconstruction Meditations, an improvisational approach to the works of Thelonious Monk, Luciano Berio and Igor Stravinsky. Greenlief's music is a unique hybrid of jazz and 20th century composition, and the saxophonist performs with passion, intellectual acuity, and an ear for the ever-developing language of the saxophone.
Bay Area flutist Diane Grubbe has performed and recorded with orchestras and chamber ensembles in North America and Europe. Drawn to the evolving tonal possibilities of the flute, Diane enjoys studying and performing contemporary works and performs with the SFSound Group and other Bay Area creative musicians. Her solo set will include exciting and colorful works of Giacinto Scelsi, Toru Takemitsu and Melissa Hui.
