Tribute to Kotoku and the Japanese Anarchists: Devin Hoff Platform & Barry Pateman
This event is another in our semi-regular series of anarchist history and music events curated by Devin Hoff. Tonight's show is a benefit for The Dawn, a monthly Anarchist newspaper published here in Oakland. Tonight's show features readings by the incomparable Anarchist historian, Barry Pateman, pre-eminent author and researcher about Emma Goldman and others. Pateman discusses Kotoku, an early 20th Century anarchist and activist responsible for translating many works of radical European literature into Japanese. Kotoku and 12 other anarchists were hung in Japan in 1911 for plotting to assassinate the Emperor, though innocent of any wrongdoing.
Music is provided by the Devin Hoff Platform featuring Devin Hoff (contrabass) with Miya Osaki (vocals). Currently Hoff is half of Good for Cows (with drummer, Ches Smith), a third of the Nels Cline Singers (with Nels Cline and Scott Amendola), and a fourth of Redressers (which features Ches Smith, Carla Kihlstedt, and Marika Hughes). He is also a member of Plays Monk (with Amendola and Ben Goldberg).
Cost: $5-$10
