Kiku Day - shakuhachi. Thesis Recital: Kuraui Dake (Bamboo gone Wild)
Kiku plays an ancient style of shakuhachi without lacquer and grinded stone in the bore. She is focusing on contemporary music and improvisation.
The program will consist of:
Tsuru no Mae by Vytautas Germanavicius, written for her, on 4 different shakuhachi.
Tender Sadness of Tyrants as They Dance by Frank Denyer. Jos Zwaanenburg, flutist from Holland (Barton Workshop, Cornelius Cardew Ensemble) will join her on bass flute in this duo. The players will tap rhythms with their feet, sing and play.
Ryoanji by John Cage is also played on 4 different sizes shakuhachi (3 pre-recorded tracks) and percussion by Shayna Dunkelman.
There will thereafter be improvisation, one solo and a quartet: Fred Frith, Anne LeBaron, Kanoko Nishi.
There will be a reception afterwards in the Ensemble Room in the Music Building.
