Damon Smith:
After playing bass guitar in punk & art rock bands for several years, exposure to Peter Kowald's "Duos: Europa" lp in 1994 caused Damon to suddenly switch gears in 1994 to study improvisation on the upright bass. Since then his musical career has been characterized by an intense focus on his instrument, and studies/collaborations with world-class performers such as Lisle Ellis and Kowald himself. Listening to him today, it's impossible to overlook the fruits of that study. Damon performs with an astounding amount of clarity and intuition, drawing elements from jazz & classical music, as well as several unusual/extended techniques, to represent his unmistakeable musical personality.
Since his emergence on the west coast in the late 1970s, Evander Music Founder
Phillip Greenlief has worked internationally with many of the great improvisers and composers in the post-jazz continuum, as well prominent innovators and master improvisers in new music. His performances and recordings have received radio broadcasts and rave reviews around the world, and his ever-evolving relationship with the saxophone continues to unfold with its expansive sound vocabulary and mastery of extreme dynamic ranges, deep regard for melody and form, and a humor and wit that is not dissimilar to the Native American Coyote tales.
Jerome Bryerton's work involves the use of sounds and gestures derived from Eastern and Western percussionists. Equally important is his incorporation of ideas/philosophies of visual artists Gerhard Richter, Richard Serra and Cy Twombly. The reason being, that music, and particularly 'creative' music, cannot reach it's full potential without a concentrated devotion to color and space. Jerome has performed and recorded with the likes of Wolfgang Fuchs, John Butcher, Frank Gratkowski and Henry Kaiser.
Kristian Aspelin began playing guitar at age 12. Since that time, he studied and played many styles of music before embracing and dedicating himself to free jazz/improvisation while in his mid-20s. He has studied and/or performed with a number of leading improvisers in various genres, including Joe Morris, Steve Lantner, Gerald Cleaver, Larry Ochs, Damon Smith, Bill Bell, David Fiuczynski, Bennett Friedman, Ralph Carney, Jerome Bryerton, and John Schott.
