Saturday, April 29 Sarah Wilson Quintet + Wayne Grim solo 8:30PM, $6-10

Composer/trumpeter/vocalist Sarah Wilson recently transplanted from NYC will play original tunes with Ben Goldberg (clarinets), John Schott (electric guitar), Devin Hoff (bass), and Scott Amendola (drums). Internationally acclaimed composer/pianist Myra Melford describes Wilson's music as an "improviser's dream." Her music is "rich with suggestion and possibility: ebullient and tender, poignant and humorous." Wilson's compositions reflect a deep understanding of the connection between images and motion. Grammy Award nominee Dave Douglas, composer and trumpet player, commends her development of a "new music," which evokes the theatrical. Her techniques of "orchestrating tightly wound counterpoint" with a "fresh, unexpected approach to rhythm" summon the imagination.

Wayne Grim begins the evening performing solo improvisations and compositions for guitar. Grim's music is informed both by Western and Eastern musical traditions. He performs in Van Boven with percussionist, Jon Brumit.

Cost: $6-10
