Dutch Interior
Joan Miró's 1928 painting, Dutch Interior II, was based on a postcard replica of Cats' Dancing Lesson, a painting by the 17th century Dutch master, Jan Steen. Miró attempted an exact transformation of all the details of this painting into the realm of the fantastic. In this composition, the Dutch national anthem, Wilhelmus van Nassouwe, undergoes a similar transformation.
Dancer
Inspired by Joan Miró’s 1927 painting.
Whirligig
A trance-inducing (hopefully) piece in 7/4.
Catalan Peasant in the Moonlight
Inspired by Joan Miró’s 1968 painting.
Kamilopardali
Giraffe. In Greek the word kamilo means camel and pardali means spotted. In modern Greek, pardali has come to mean peculiar or funky. A giraffe is a funky camel.
Before a Single Pain (has got within range of your ever-galloping heart)
Inspired by a line from the Leishman and Spender translation of Rilke’s Fifth Duino Elegy. The Fifth Duino Elegy was in turn inspired by Picasso’s Rose Period painting, Les Saltimbanques.
Burnt Picture
Miró’s 1973 painting, executed with broad movements and with a large gaping hole burnt into the middle, is an extreme example of the use of sparseness and openness in his late paintings.
Athenian Birds
An Athenian writes: "Your Athenian birds are very funny. A little off-beat and clumsy. I like them. I can almost see them walking around trying to look proud and serious, but they are so funny in their effort."
Bellesguard
Inspired by Antoni Gaudí’s 1900-1909 building.
Elephants and Dinosaurs
Inspired by the columns of Casa Milà and the roof of Casa Battló.
The Case of the Elephant's Foot: Casa Milà was constantly beset with legal difficulties. For instance, the municipal council demanded that Gaudí remove a column that stuck out into the Passeig de Gràcia. Gaudí's response: "Fine! tell them that if they want to cut away at my building as if it were a cheese we'll carve a little notice on the smoothed off surface 'mutilated by the order of the Barcelona City Council on such and such a date...' " Eventually he had his way.
El Capricho (the Goat)
Inspired by Gaudí’s 1883-1885 building.
Dragon’s Gate
Inspired by the gate that Gaudi designed for the entrance to the Güell Pavilions.
Mudejar Nights
Inspired by Gaudi’s Casa Vicens (1883-1888).
Parable
Inspired by the parabolic arches in the hallways of Gaudi’s Colegio Teresiano (1888-1889). The Greek word parabole means analogy, application, comparison. A parable is a simple story from which a moral lesson can be drawn. A parabola is produced by the application of a given area to a given straight line.
