Barbara Golden performs the third installment of her multimedia memoirs, "Me and Mills"
Accompanied by the House Band: Carla Fabrizio, Sarah Willner, and Wendy Reid.
Attending Mills College was one of the most significant events in my life. I arrived there in 1979, a 40-year-old Montreal housewife/schoolteacher. During the 70s, having discovered Stockhausen, Berio, Ligeti, Ashley, Riley, and Cage, I decided to apply to Mills' Center for Contemporary Music, leaving behind family, kid and cats. I loaded my VW Beetle with books, piano music, camping gear, cast iron frypans and a guy. Two weeks later we arrived in San Francisco via New Orleans and the Grand Canyon. I thought I'd write string quartets and symphonies. I wrote raucous songs and cookbooks, created tape pieces, did radio (with everybody who was anybody in "the scene"), cabaret singing, partying and Balinese music.A career? Nah!A life? You bet!
