Illuminations and Reflections: The First Annual Symposium Music in the 21st Century

San Francisco State University will celebrate the 100th birthday of 20th century composers Elliott Carter and Olivier Messiaen, and savor the promise and excitement of classical music’s future, during “Illuminations and Reflections: The First Annual Symposium on Music in the 21st Century.” Concerts by world-renowned performers will explore the beautiful and stirring music of Carter, Messiaen and SF State Professor Richard Festinger and present exciting new work by seven emerging composers chosen in international competition. Panel discussions with scholars and industry leaders will enhance the event.

Program: Messiaen: Poémes Pour Mi; Carter: Three Poems of Robert Frost; Carter: String Quartet No. 2; Carter: Triple Duo; Messiaen: Piece for String Quartet and Piano; and Carter: Tempo e Tempi.
Performers: Susan Narucki, soprano; Alexander String Quartet; sfSoundGroup; and Harvey Sollberger, conductor.
