Tom Bickley
Recorder, Vocals, Electronics, co-founder and director of the Cornelius Cardew Choir
Composer/performer Tom Bickley (vocals, recorders, electronics, etc.) based in Berkeley, CA and Houston, Texas, studied Gregorian chant, other medieval music, and African American sacred music. His degrees are in music, liturgy and information science. He is certified by Pauline Oliveros to teach the meditative improv techniques of Deep Listening. In addition to his work with new music ensembles Gray Code and Comma, he has performed with Pauline Oliveros, Anne LeBaron, Viv Corringham, Philip Gelb, the Denison Kimball Trio, the Scratch Orchestra and others. He is active in the duo Gusty Winds May Exist, with shakuhachi player Nancy Beckman, and as sound designer with the hjw/Dimensions Dance Company. He teaches privately and leads sound workshops for children and
adults.

In Washington, DC he was on the faculty at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop and an artist in residence in the DC Public Schools. His work is available on CD on Quarterstick (DK3's Neutrons) and MetatronPress (Gray Code Live in Philadelphia, Comma's (voices) and Gusty Winds May Exist), and in privately issued CD's by
composer-performer Norman Lowrey (riverdream through us and spiritdream, both with Pauline Oliveros). His work has received support from Meet the Composer, the Pauline Oliveros Foundation, and the Meredith Foundation.

THREE TRAPPED TIGERS Recorder Duo (David Barnett and Tom Bickley) present Pilgrim songs from the 14th c. Llibre Vermell de Montserrat, selections from “Music for Every Occasion” by Alvin Curran, a ballade by 14th c. Italian Francesco Landini, a 13th c. aubade, Bickley’s Hibernian Cities/Hebridean Islands for alto recorder and electronics, and Medieval Nights for solo tenor recorder by Pete Rose. As the styles and periods juxtapose, with improvisation as a through line, the duo invites you to explore pre modern music for post modern ears and vice versa.  More...
