John Ingle
Saxophonist/composer/improviser
Saxophonist John Ingle is originally from Memphis, TN and now resides and works in San Francisco. His music is informed and influenced by contemparary concert music, jazz, electronic music, improvised music, various Asian folk traditions, and the blues and gospel of his native Southeast US. He currently collaborates with electronics innovator Laetitia Sonami, in duo with composer/dulcimerist Dan Joseph, and in the quartet "Shinola". He also performs with the new music group "sfSound Ensemble" and with the popular electric-jazz-rock band "Britches Brue"(sic). John's solo saxophone music emphasizes multiphonics and subtle control of extended saxophone techniques.
He has developed a style of harmonic singing that he uses through the saxophone. This wide timbral palate has led to many collaborations with electronic musicians, including David Behrman, John Bischoff, Chris Brown, and Laetitia Sonami. John has performed in North America, Europe, and Asia with such diverse artists as Eliane Radigue, Wadada Leo Smith, Miya Masaoka, Marco Eneidi, Williiam Winant, Douglas Ewart, India Cook, Frederic Blin, Fred Frith, the Memphis Symphony, the Taipei Philharmonic and pop icon Stevie Wonder. Recent concerts include performances with Laetitia Sonami at the Extended Instrument Festival at Engine 27 in NYC, and a solo concert at Acme Observatory in Berkeley, CA. John was a y2k artist-in-residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts, where he produced "heremusic", a large scale multimedia concert with kinetic sculptor Mike Meyers, the fim collective "silt", and an ensemble of musicians performing his new site-specific compositions. He has a Master of Arts degree from Mills College where he studied with Pauline Oliveros and Glen Spearman, among others.

West Oakland Sound Series [2201 Poplar Street Dresher Ensemble Studio Oakland]
SFSOUNDGROUP presents a concert honoring recently departed composers. The first half features works by the Russian composer SOFIA GUBAIDULINA (1931 – 2025), known for her spiritual and dramatic works. The second half includes a circular breathing wind duo by the pioneering minimalist composer TOM JOHNSON (1939–2024), and a work for improvisers and tape by the celebrated composer and conductor PETER EÖTVÖS (1944–2024). The evening also includes "Instruments II" by MORTON FELDMAN, a prime example of his evolving -- and often overlooked -- output from the 1970's. Rounding out the program with a living composer, sfSound's own MONICA SCOTT presents a recent composition for cello and piano.  More...
