Our mission is to apply art and technology to create positive social impact through education, civic engagement, and public programs.

We use digital tools to create art and design projects that benefit society. We test and scale projects with high impact potential, teach digital tools to support artists and technologists, and inspire our community by promoting meaningful new work.

We apply the promise and inspiration of digital art to a broader social context. Our programs are transforming cities into creative outlets, applying technology to solve problems, and shaping how art is created and consumed in the digital era.

This month at Gray Area we're reading a mind-boggling book from the 1970s! Its author, Manford Eaton (1897-1977), remains a mysterious figure. He worked as a consultant for ORCUS (Operational Research Company, Universal Systems) in Kansas City, Missouri. His main work, "Bio-Music," was published by Dick Higgins's Something Else Press—an unusual fit, since Eaton had no connection to the avant-garde art scene. To say more, his views aligned with Cold War-era U.S. policy rather than challenging the militarized socio-economic order.

. . .join our book club to make a judgment of your own!

Reading: Eaton, M. L. (1974). Bio-Music. Something Else Press.
