IMPROMPTU - Live Improvisation with Melon Collective

Come join an evening of collective improvisation! Catch a live set from Melons, followed by some meloniuously facilitated group improvisation. Who knows what to expect? Musicians, sound creatives and audience members are welcome to participate.

MUSICIANS/ SOUND ARTIST: Bring your own instrument and come play! Out of respect for the equipment at Wyldflwr, please bring your own equipment (amps, etc.) if you are more heavily experimental or electronic. Also, if this is you, please arrive at 7p to set up.

AUDIENCE: Audience members are welcome to just listen or prompt musicians when invited!

The intention of this event is to connect through free improvisation. As an attendee, please be respectful and mindful of all participants, including in your sound, language and actions in the space.

Edgetone Records celebrates 35 years on planet Earth with a series of showcase performances.

In 1991 saxophonist Rent Romus launched his independent label Edgetone Records. Originally it was a vanity label to support his recordings, but in the year 2000 he decided it should become an entity to support original music crossing the boundaries of genre focused on D.I.Y. (do it yourself) artists looking for a ground base and label identity.

BRETT CARSON'S QUATTOUR ELEPHANTIS

QUATTUOR ELEPHANTIS is the first band Brett formed after moving to California over a decade ago and he's thrilled to reunite these stellar musicians for this performance. The music is dynamic and volatile, a brew of primeval energy, four musicians navigating constructed worlds (through language of something like "jazz"?), psychic debris accumulates in corners of sound-space and crystallizes into intricate compositional/improvisational structures; creation appears to organize itself, only to return once again to the Void.

duo B. is an ensemble of acoustic bass and percussion that plays ethereal chamber music wrapped in dense improvised soundscapes. Percussionist Jason Levis uses gongs, Tibetan singing bowls, bowed cymbals, marimba and drumset to create lush, delicate textures and abstract noise grooves. Bassist Lisa Mezzacappa draws on a palette of sinister drones, punchy vamps and acoustic bass manipulations to weave storylines through gnarly rhythms, pointillistic shapes and ecstatic melodies. In addition to performing traditionally-notated original music and arrangements, the ensemble has also worked with graphic scores, improvisation games, text, tape music, film and visual art to create a new multidisciplinary chamber music hybrid. duo B.'s influences range from free jazz to dub reggae to contemporary chamber music, from Threadgill to Zorn, the Abyssinians to the Boredoms, Messaien to Grisey and back again. The band was formed in 2005 and has performed throughout the San Francisco Bay Area (where it was born) and beyond…


MATT DAVIGNON - drum machine
Since 1993, Matt Davignon has developed his own unique style of music, which focuses largely on textures, arhythmic patterns and musical imperfections. His first experiments as a teenager were constructed using 2 boom boxes, combining household objects, CD/tape samples and heavily effected improvisation on a variety of “real instruments”. Since then, he has spent time studying (in a non-academic sense) bass guitar, live sound collage, consumer-grade electronics, prepared acoustic guitar, real-time sampling/looping, experimental turntablism, and field recordings on handheld cassette recorders. Since 2004, he has been working almost exclusively with a drum machine. Instead of using it as a rhythm device, he plays the pads manually while processing the sounds through an array of effects devices and samplers, improvising music made of organic-sounding textures, hums, gurgles and crackles.

Sand Ghost is a shapeshifting instrumental ensemble that journeys out of experimental ambient spaces into deep psychedelic grooves. With Cassandra Firmin’s commanding sense of rhythm, Melissa Mohlenhoff’s driving basslines and Nora Free’s enchanting improvisation on saxophone, the collective channels a desert entity that possesses resilience and adaptability in the face of creeping fascism. This special Sand Ghost experience welcomes additional support and performances by Lena Badhia on drums and Marceline Keene on guitar.
