An evening of audiovisual immersion celebrating the release of Marielle’s new new Thrill Jockey Records album “Star Core.” Maggi Payne will be screening her exquisite and delicate videos and tone miester from Trans Am Phil Manley will be collaborating for the first time with video synth wizard Andy Puls.

Marielle V Jakobsons is a composer and intermedia artist from Oakland, and has released recordings with Thrill Jockey, Students of Decay, Root Strata, Mexican Summer, Important Records, among others. She has been awarded the Djerassi Artist Residency, Dresher Ensemble Artist Residency, Brush Creek Foundation Arts Residency, American Composer’s Forum Grant, and NEXMAP Sounding Out California Composer’s Award. Her installations, photographs, and videos have been exhibited or screened at the LAB (CA), Warehouse 1-10 (NM), Indiana University East’s “Art + Science” Juried Exhibition (IN), Allegany Arts Council Juried Photography Exhibition (MD), Staunton International Film Festival (VA), and Madelife (CO).

On her new record Star Core, she uses her voice for the first time, while expanding on ideas she explored in her previous solo records and as one-half of the group Date Palms. Star Core revolves around minimalist synthesizer layers with melodic violin, flute, and vocals over elongated bass grooves. The songs on the album are her version of devotional hymns, and they create a cosmic yet personal environment to slow down with and to get lost in. Marielle builds installations and instruments which bring focus to visceral experience of sound and light, most recently with her “Macro-Cymatic Visual Music Instrument.” She will be performing with Chuck Johnson on electric bass, and featuring synchronous videos composed with her visual music instrument. www.mariellejakobsons.com

Maggi Payne composes music for concert presentation, video, and dance, and is a video artist, photographer, recording engineer, and Co-Director of the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College, in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she teaches composition/media, electronic music, and recording engineering. Her video works have been presented in the Americas, Europe, Japan, and Australasia. She received Composer’s Grants and an Interdisciplinary Arts Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and honorary mentions from Bourges and Prix Ars Electronica. maggipayne.com

Known mostly as a founding member of the pioneering post-rock band Trans Am, Phil Manley has also played in the Fucking Champs, Jonas Reinhardt, Oneida and Carlton Melton. Phil embarked on a solo career 5 years ago with the release of his 'Life Coach' LP. Phil's solo work features heavy guitar manipulation where the source is obliterated beyond recognition then amplified at bracing volume. Phil's solo shows have been described as "visceral" and "cathartic". www.thrilljockey.com/products/life-coach

Andy Puls is a video artist, analog electronics designer, and composer/musician. He runs the experimental media production studio, "Whistlehut" in Richmond, CA, where he produces his own and others' audio and visual recordings, and designs electronic audio and video devices. His video work centers around live, intuitive, "no source" visualizations. Using video hardware processing, camera feedback loops, and video synthesis, he uncovers the inner-world landscapes existing behind the scan-lines. www.videopaws.com
