The Nouveau Classical Project: Currents
“Currents” features works composed for flute, clarinet, violin, cello, piano, and electronics by Olga Bell, Gabrielle Herbst, and Isaac Schankler, commissioned by The Nouveau Classical Project. The Nouveau Classical Project (NCP) is a New York-based, all-women contemporary classical music ensemble. NCP collaborates with visual artists and fashion designers and has been hailed for “bringing a refreshing edge” to concerts (VICE).
NCP views fashion as a form of artistic self-expression. As fashion is an element that already exists on stage, on musicians’ bodies, NCP utilizes fashion as an interpretive force in performance, collaborating with independent or high fashion designers. For “Currents,” NCP Artistic Directors styled the ensemble’s looks based on the concert’s theme with pieces from SoHo-based independent design collective Flying Solo.
