Hyo-shin Na’s writing for both eastern and western instruments has been recognized as thoroughly unique, particularly by younger musicians. A hallmark of her music is its willingness to let contrasting traditions and sounds co-exist or even conflict in her music. On the occasion of her 60th birthday, this concert gives Bay Area listeners, many of whom know Na’s music well, an opportunity to hear a summation of her work at this important juncture – music for eastern instruments, music for western instruments, pieces combining eastern and western, and a juxtaposition of newly written works in premiere performances and older works.

The Wooden Fish Ensemble is known for its innovative juxtapositions of Eastern and Western musics, old and new, and traditional and avant-garde/experimental sounds, and have worked with a diverse group of composers that includes Cage, Wolff, Rzewski, Ustvolskaya, Feldman, and Hyo-shin Na.
