Grachan Moncur III was a powerhouse trombonist and composer who went from playing bop with the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet to stretching out with Jackie McLean and other forward-looking mid-60s jazz players, to moving to a more open/free thing in the '70s and '80s. The band is focused on work Moncur did in 1963/1964 with McLean and on his own — on records like McLean’s One Step Beyond and Destination Out, and his own records,Evolution and Some Other Stuff.
